You know me by now as someone who is a passionate evangelist for people pursuing their vision and living an authentic life. It is the only path to true fulfillment. Yet, the litmus test for whether or not we’ve found our way to self-declaration is the extent to which our genuine self has served others and been validated by the depth of our existential reach. The art of true selfishness is the antithesis of what Dr. Martin Luther King referred to as “hardheartedness” and the “shackles of prejudice, half-truths, and downright ignorance.” Each of us must dig deep inside to find our own answer to Dr. King’s profound question: “What are you doing for others?”

When Death Cab for Cutie wore blue ribbons to the Grammy Awards a few years back to protest Auto-Tune abuse in the music industry their courage to step out was exceeded only by their relevancy to a wider audience. 
American author, essayist, and literary critic William Deresiewicz coined the term “Excellent Sheep” to refer to those people who keep their nose to the grindstone and perform well at the tasks at hand but never question if what they’re doing is what truly matters to them. Perhaps we’d be well-advised to “take a day off” from the hamster wheel and heed the advice of Ferris Bueller: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Living at 8,700 feet in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Erika can almost touch the airplanes she used to fly. The thin air and cloud touching provides inspiration at the computer keyboard. If she’s not out running her own business, teaching, belly dancing, kickboxing, organizing a Town Hall or board of director’s meeting, she is writing at her house on the hill with her family, friends, three dogs, rabbits, horses, guinea pigs and any other strays she finds along the way. Nebraska-born orator and politician William Jennings Bryan was a three-time nominee for President of the United States as a member of the populist wing of the Democratic Party. He served two terms as a member of the United States House of Representatives and was United States Secretary of State under President Woodrow Wilson. With his deep, commanding voice and wide travels, he was perhaps the best-known orator and lecturer of the era, dubbed “The Great Commoner” because of his faith in the wisdom of the common people.
